Debate about freedom of information in Italy

In the debate on freedom of information in Italy, the speaker of the ERA, the EQF and ESD warned that the European Union should not be used as a forum for the settlement of national political issues. S & D, ALDE, Greens / EFA and GUE in turn asked the European Commission to prepare legislation for media pluralism.
Media Commissioner Viviane REDING underlined that the EU has limited powers in the field of print media, but all Member States have the institutions of their own to solve problems related to fundamental rights. She urged lawmakers not to allow the European institutions through the issues that need to be addressed nationally.
Chairman of the EPP Joseph DAUL (France) condemned the use of Parliament as a forum for national debate and stressed that Italy is a democratic country where the rule of law is respected. According to him, the Parliament has no power to issue as today and should not be used to settle accounts.
David-Maria SASSOLI (S & D, Italy) said that Italy is a great democratic country, as was evidenced by yesterday's decision by the Constitutional Court. However, the right to information as it should be ensured through common standards in all EU countries. In this context, he called for a European directive with indicators to be applicable in all Member States.
ALDE leader Guy VERHOFSTADT (Belgium) pointed out that he could not deny the existence of a problem. According to him the fact that three European countries (Italy, Bulgaria and Romania) are defined by the organization Freedom House as having only "partly free" media is timid, and therefore the Commission must ensure media pluralism.
Dutch MP group of the Greens Judith SARGENTINI defined as "shameful" experience this debate to be removed from the agenda. According to the deputy, the Italian journalists to impose self-censorship because they receive pressure and consequently the Italian democracy has become vulnerable. Finally, Judith Sargentini argued that Member States must comply with the Copenhagen criteria, as well as candidate countries.
Ryszard CZARNECKI (EQF, Poland) pointed out that similar questions have been raised in other Member States, including Poland, without being subject to debate in Parliament. According to him, the Italians have to decide on its internal problems.
Patrick LE HYARIC (GUE / NGL, France), criticizing the influence of Italian Prime Minister on the media, which he said is incompatible with modern democracy. He then called for the establishment of a European supervisory authority for the freedom of the press.
Francesco SPERONI (ESD, Italy) stressed that the opposition in Italy has ample space in the press. If Parliament is really of the opinion that in Italy there is no press freedom, it should use Article 7 of the EU to initiate a procedure for violations of fundamental rights, but in fact it has no grounds for such action.
In his response at the end of the debate, Commissioner REDING argued before the lawmakers that legislation on media pluralism can be created only if there are problems with the internal market to be resolved precisely through such legislation.
The European Parliament will vote on a resolution on freedom of information at the plenary session in Strasbourg 19-22 October.
